What are Nutritional, Environmental and Lifestyle Medicine?

Nutritional, environmental and lifestyle medicine look at how everyday influences—including food, lifestyle habits and environmental exposures—may affect your health and wellbeing. These approaches can complement conventional medical care and are tailored to your individual history, symptoms, goals and capacity for change.

Nutritional medicine uses food and nutrition to support health. It may involve practical dietary changes, such as increasing whole and minimally processed foods, addressing nutritional adequacy, identifying foods that may worsen symptoms for some individuals, and developing an eating pattern that is realistic and sustainable. Where appropriate, carefully selected nutritional supplements may also be recommended.

Environmental medicine considers whether exposures in your home, workplace or wider environment may be relevant to your health concerns. This can include discussion of factors such as mould and dampness, pesticides, air quality, heavy metals and other potential chemical exposures. The focus is on identifying practical, safe ways to reduce unnecessary exposure where relevant.

Lifestyle medicine is an evidence-informed approach that supports health through sustainable changes in daily habits. It may include support with nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, relationships and substance use. Small, consistent changes in these areas can make a meaningful difference to long-term health and quality of life.

Any XR/ imaging and blood test results

The initial consultation is 90 minutes what does this include?

Your initial consultation includes a comprehensive review of your completed health and nutritional history questionnaire, environmental toxin exposure history, and symptom screening. We may also use disease-specific questionnaires, such as those relating to adrenal, hormonal, or mental health concerns.

A thorough assessment is then completed, which may include appropriate functional pathology investigations. These can involve routine blood tests, micronutrient testing, environmental toxin analysis, gut and liver function testing, antioxidant status, salivary, urinary or blood hormone testing, organic acid testing, genetic profiling, and cognitive assessment where relevant.

We will also arrange follow-up appointments to review your test results, discuss your progress, and refine your plan as needed. Your management plan will be tailored to your health goals, test results, illness history, and individual capabilities.

Following this, you will receive your personalised Source Health and Wellness management plan. This may include lifestyle recommendations such as diet and exercise, targeted micronutrient support, and in some cases specific supplements to help support cellular health, reduce inflammation, support gut health, nourish the brain and nervous system, and assist with detoxification.

FAQ

At Source Health and Wellness, we are here to support and guide you through the process step by step.

What does the 60-minute initial consultation include?

Your first appointment is a thorough, personalised assessment designed to help us understand your health history, current concerns and goals.

During your consultation, we will:

  • Review your completed health, nutrition and lifestyle questionnaire.
  • Discuss your medical history, current symptoms, medications, supplements, diet, sleep, stress, movement and relevant environmental exposures.
  • Explore any specific areas of concern using focused screening questionnaires where appropriate, such as for hormonal, adrenal, digestive or mental health symptoms.
  • Identify the key factors that may be contributing to your current health picture.
  • Discuss appropriate next steps and create an initial, practical plan tailored to your needs and capacity.

Where clinically appropriate, we may recommend further investigation. This may include routine pathology testing or selected functional testing relating to nutritional status, hormones, digestive function, environmental exposures, liver function, organic acids, genetics or cognitive health. Any recommended testing will be discussed with you first, including its purpose and any associated costs.

Your personalised Management Plan may include nutrition and lifestyle recommendations, targeted practitioner-only nutritional support, and other strategies to support areas such as energy, inflammation, digestive health, brain and nervous system function, and overall wellbeing.

Source Health and Wellness offers both in-person and on-line consultations.  The cost for in-person and on-line consultation is the same.  The duration of both consultations is also the same.

Most functional testing can be completed from home. The laboratory will send testing kits directly to your address, along with clear instructions for how to collect and return your samples.

Many important investigations use urine, saliva, or stool samples, which can be collected in the comfort of your own home and posted back to the laboratory as directed.

If blood testing is required, a kit will also be sent to your home. In many cases, you can then take this kit to your local pathology collection centre, where the blood sample will be collected and returned to the laboratory by courier.
